Human trafficking is exploitation. It often involves control, fear, manipulation, threats, debt, isolation, or abuse.
What trafficking may look like
Trafficking can involve sex trafficking, labor trafficking, or exploitation connected to basic needs like shelter, food, money, transportation, protection, or employment.
It can happen in public or private places. It can involve someone the person knows, trusts, depends on, or fears.
Report safely
Immediate danger: call 911.
Trafficking concern: call 1-888-373-7888 or text HELP to 233733.
You do not need proof to make a report.
Warning Signs
Pay attention when something feels controlled or unsafe.
Control
Someone is not allowed to speak for themselves, seems monitored, or appears coached.
Fear
Someone seems fearful, anxious, injured, ashamed, or afraid of another person nearby.
No control over documents or money
Someone does not control their own ID, phone, money, transportation, or schedule.
Unsafe work
Someone works long hours, lives where they work, is threatened, or is not paid fairly.
Youth exploitation
A young person exchanges sex or sexual images for money, food, shelter, transportation, attention, or protection.
Online grooming
Someone pressures a young person for photos, secrecy, gifts, meetups, or sexual conversations.
What to do
- Call 911 if someone is in immediate danger.
- Contact the trafficking hotline with what you observed.
- Share location, time, descriptions, vehicle details, and safety concerns.
- Offer resources only when it is safe and private.
What not to do
- Do not confront a suspected trafficker.
- Do not attempt a rescue by yourself.
- Do not pressure someone to disclose details.
- Do not post identifying information online.
